I wanted to start my blog with an explanation of its title. I know, it sounds like a rip off of SNL Weekend Update's "Are You Serious" segment, but it actually has roots in a much milder show.
Does anyone remember Today's Special? It was a Canadian TV show in the '80s that aired on PBS in the States. It was about a mannequin in a department store that comes alive at night and interacts with some puppets and a shop girl who inexplicably stays in the store all night, every night.
At any rate, someone resurrected this childhood gem and posted whole episodes on YouTube. (What isn't posted on YouTube these days???) So a friend and I watched the "A Visit to the Opera" episode in which Jeff (the mannequin) gets to leave the store to see the opera. The only catch is that in order to stay alive while he's out of the store, Jodie and Sam (a puppet) have to keep hold of lever on a magic machine. Furthermore, if anyone tries to talk to them, they can only answer with "Wow" and "Really".
Anyway, the "wows" and "reallys" have become a thing with my friend and me. At first it was all in good fun...a lighthearted "wow. really?" here and there, but as of late, particularly with the new administration, those words have become a sarcastic, "really? wow. really?"
$39 billion, GM & Chrysler...really? wow...
